Modern engines make use of their exhaust gas in a variety of ways. Most commonly, the gas is recirculated in order to reduce combustion temperatures and thus reduce emissions.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation Components

In order to maintain compliance with the increasing stringency of exhaust emissions levels without impairing engine performance, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is one of the most frequently used technology for reducing the environmental burden of exhaust pollutants. As such, it ensures the reduction of harmful nitrous oxides and soot particulates. By supplying EGR valves and flaps specifically designed to meet attendant requirements, we are making our contribution to environmentally friendly engine technology.

Electrical EGR Valves

Designed to control the exhaust gas recirculation volume on the basis of a preset electrical setpoint value, electrical EGR valves take their instructions either from a system of control electronics or a simple position sensor.

Electrical EGR Flap Valves

Designed to control the exhaust gas recirculation volume on the basis of a nominal electrical value, these valves can be supplied complete with control electronics or equipped with a position sensor, as required by a specific application.

Electrical Throttle Flap

On diesel engines, and with a preset electrical setpoint value, these devices serve to increase the exhaust gas return volume, the removal of NOx from diesel particulates, and to dampen the engine shutoff "slap".

Pneumatic EGR Valves

Control the exhaust gas recirculation volume by means of a preset pneumatic setpoint value.

Pneumatic Bypass Flaps

Directing the exhaust gas flow either directly through the EGR cooler or past the same through the bypass, these control devices are located upstream of a variety of cooler designs.

Pneumatic Actuators

Providing the link between thermal management and mechanical components, these devices convert thermal information to actuator travel.


The varying applications and divergent technologies of the internal combustion engine call for thermostats featuring different operating characteristics and modes of operation. For this reason, the BorgWarner thermostat program covers a remarkably broad performance range.

Thermostat Inserts

With their accurate coolant control, these rugged and maintenance-free devices are based on the operating principle developed by BorgWarner, and have stood the test of time for several decades.

Integrated Thermostats

Comprised of insert and housing, these modules are fully integrated into the engine.

Electrically Heated Thermostats

Characterized by a broader working range, they adjust the internal engine temperature as needed in response to control signals from engine management. Because these devices contribute to reducing fuel consumption, they may be deserving of the attribute “environmentally friendly”.

Map-Controlled Sleeve Valve Thermostats

Controlled by engine management independent of temperature, these thermostats facilitate variable control of the valve opening. They also aid in reducing fuel consumption, helping to conserve precious environmental resources.

Electromotoric Thermostats

Distinguished by their construction from thermostats with annular slide valves, these are used when high positioning accuracy of the slide valve and continuously variable, precision flow control is required.

Oil Temperature Thermostats

Factory-preset to a fixed temperature range, they control the lubricating oil circulation within that range.


These devices accurately convey temperature information from thermal management to associated electrical circuits. Fast, reliable and maintenance-free, they ensure a long engine life.
